How to Hide Treasure Hunt Clues Without Mixing Up the Order

A treasure hunt works when each clue points to the place holding the next card. Most setup mistakes happen when a card is hidden at its own answer. Use this simple order to keep the trail connected.

The rule: the answer to clue 1 is where card 2 goes

Imagine clue 1 describes a bookshelf. Give card 1 to the children and hide card 2 at the bookshelf. If clue 2 describes the sofa, put card 3 at the sofa. Repeat this pattern until the final clue leads to the reward.

A six-card example

  1. Give card 1 to the players. Its answer is Bookshelf.
  2. Hide card 2 at the bookshelf. Its answer is Sofa.
  3. Hide card 3 beside the sofa cushions. Its answer is Shoe rack.
  4. Hide card 4 at the shoe rack. Its answer is Dining table.
  5. Hide card 5 under the dining table. Its answer is Pillow.
  6. Hide card 6 beneath the pillow. Its answer is Toy basket.
  7. Put the treasure at the toy basket.

Prepare the cards before hiding anything

Print the clue sheets and cut along the borders. Arrange the cards face up in numerical order. Keep the parent guide separate, and check that the list of destinations reflects the latest version you saved. If you changed a location after printing, download and print the updated cards and guide.

Walk the route once as a grown-up

Start with card 1 and actually follow its answer. At each stop, check that the next card is present and that its number is correct. If two places are similar, make the clue more specific or choose a different destination. Keep all locations reachable without climbing or moving heavy objects.

Use the parent guide as your checklist

CluePup includes the hiding order in the private parent guide. Tick each item as you put it in place, then keep the guide and hints with the supervising adult. The children need the clues, not the answer sheet.

If you discover a mistake during play

Pause the group, check the next card number against the guide and move the missing card to the correct place. A calm reset is better than asking children to solve a clue that cannot lead anywhere. Before the next game, correct the saved hunt so future printouts match the route.
