Campfire Quest treasure hunt illustration

Find a hunt that fits.

Start with the garden you actually have

A backyard hunt does not need a large lawn. A flowerpot, garden bench, watering can and picnic blanket can make a connected route. Replace any suggested location that is not present in your own space, and check that each riddle describes the replacement.

Agree the boundaries before play

Show the children where the game begins and ends. Keep cards away from roads, water, tools and places that require climbing. A clue can be beside a gate without asking a child to open it or leave the garden. An adult should supervise the group and help with every transition.

Keep cards in place

Outdoor cards can move in wind. Choose sheltered spots and secure the cards with a suitable removable method that will not damage the object. Check the route shortly before play. Keep a spare copy of the PDF and collect all cards afterwards.

Have an indoor alternative

If the weather changes, replace the destinations in the editor and regenerate the affected clues before printing a new set. Do not move a card indoors while leaving a riddle that still points outside. Keep the parent guide matched to the cards you are using.

A REAL PRINTABLE TRAIL EXAMPLE

Six clues, one connected adventure.

Fictional explorer: Alex · Ages 7–9 · Replace the sample places with ones you have.

  1. Clue 1

Welcome to Campfire Quest! Your first discovery begins here. I hold a plant and a little soil. Look beside my pot, not where roots toil.

  2. Clue 2

Your team has uncovered a new secret message. Outside I offer a place to rest. Beside the garden bench, continue your quest.

  3. Clue 3

A coded message has appeared along your trail. Decode the hiding place. A=1, B=2, C=3, up to Z=26: 23-1-20-5-18-9-14-7 / 3-1-14

  4. Clue 4

You are getting closer. Follow this discovery. Spread on the grass for snacks in the sun, find a clue before you run.

  5. Clue 5

Another secret waits for a curious explorer. Where you enter the garden to play, a clue nearby will lead the way.

  6. Clue 6

The treasure is within reach. Solve your final clue! A table outside catches sun; look beside it for more fun.

See the sample hiding guide — grown-ups only

The answer to each clue tells you where to put the next card. Keep this guide with the grown-up.

  1. Hand card 1 to the explorers.
  2. Hide card 2 at Flowerpot — the answer to clue 1.
  3. Hide card 3 at Garden bench — the answer to clue 2.
  4. Hide card 4 at Watering can — the answer to clue 3.
  5. Hide card 5 at Picnic blanket — the answer to clue 4.
  6. Hide card 6 at Garden gate — the answer to clue 5.
  7. Put the treasure at Patio table — the answer to clue 6.

More than six cards.

An invitation to begin

Add the explorer or team name, date, time, location and RSVP details. One invitation introduces the shared adventure.

A guide for the grown-up

Keep the hiding order and answers private. Optional hints help you offer a nudge without immediately giving away the destination.

A certificate to celebrate

Use the explorer name, or add a list of names in Pages for individual certificates. The invitation name stays unchanged.
